Welcome to Generation Gap where we ask you about your favorite generation of a certain multi-generational car nameplate. Then, explain why your choice is right to the rest of us uneducated folks.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

This week on Generation Gap we’re finally back on European soil with a model line hailing from the continental country of France. Beginning with the venerable 504 and 505 and culminating in the rather pretty (in my opinion) new 508, today’s large family cars come from Peugeot, of course! Will the robust and durable early cars beat out the elegant new 508?

Here are the options:

Peugeot 504 [1968 - 1983]

Peugeot 505 [1979 - 1992]

The Peugeot 508 looks quite handsome, seems like a good daily.

I’ve always loved the styling (and reliability...there’s a reason they are so popular in Africa, even still!) of the 504...especially the Euro-spec sedan with the ‘square’ headlights....very handsome car! Would love to have one someday! I mean....look at it! :)

Old French cars are simply gorgeous...beautiful in a simple way :)

Completely agreed! :D We had the 504 sold here in Canada as well, but, sadly, with the stupid giant US plastic bumpers and quad-round headlights :(

Still nice if you convert it back, but just not the same style :(

I voted for the 504. Longevity wins.

Kinja'd!!!

Especially since the Peugeot 504 was made in Nigeria until 2006, and in Kenya and Taiwan until 2004.

Kinja'd!!!

Sometime in the ‘90s, the sedan got a tail-lift and trim updates that modernized it a bit.

And let’s not forget the pickup and especially the coupe and convertible versions.

I vote for all but the 407, as it’s the only crappy car on that list.

I’d love to own a 504 coupe, a 505 wagon, a 405 MI16 and a 508 wagon. I already own a 406 coupe.

Agree with all of the above. I want to import a 406 coupe to the states sometime, now that the early ones are over 25 years old...

The 406 coupe was introduced in 1997, that’s only 18 years ago. Mine turned 15 this year, meaning it would be legal in Canada. You’ll have to wait until 2022 for the earliest ones. Early 405s are over 25 years old now though, but I believe those were actually sold in the US back then, with a limited array of engine options. There’s no 405 coupe though, just like there are no 508 coupes.

My vote goes to the 405, because Mi16, but the only bad car on the list is the 407. The 406 could be very handsome, even discounting the delightful Coupé, so it gets second:

Kinja'd!!!

Oh, and if I were to get a 508, I’d much rather the facelift/revamp:(It’s kinda hard to tell now that they’re reusing model names.)

Darn, I was wondering why it was so difficult to find a 1990 406 coupe...that’s ok, I’m only 16 so it’s probably good to, oh, I don’t know, maybe go to college and get a job and house before I start importing 25 year old French coupes...I wonder what the reasoning was behind the 406 coupe to start with, but I do love that it exists since its Pininfarina lines are some of the best that you can find for not much money.

P.S. Your car(s) look amazing :D

And they’re not even my only Pininfarina designed Peugeots. I shot this today, it’s a 1997 306 convertible. Sorry for boasting.

Yes, the 407 was the low point in Peugeot’s history...in the states we even got the Mi16 so they’re a bit easier to spot in the classifieds...the 406 is quite elegant, especially in the staggeringly beautiful coupe form by Pininfarina, and thanks for mentioning the 508 facelift, I will add a picture to the post (I like to include facelifts as well as generation changes). Also, Peugeot’s naming strategy is one of the most convoluted I have ever seen, as it took me nearly 45 minutes to sort out the difference between the 400s, the 500s, and the 600s, before I finally settled on the 504-505-405-406-407-508 series...I almost did 604-605-607-508 but I figured that the 504 line would be more iconic and relatable, especially with cars such as the 406 Mi16 and Coupe, the venerable 505 wagon, and the horrific 407 as portrayed in Top Gear...

No problem! It’s not boasting if it’s true...the 90’s Peugeots IMO were some of the best looking Pugs ever because of the Pininfarina tie-in, and all of your cars look magnificent, with the elegant 406, the cheeky 205, and the sleek 306 convertible...so I guess your fleet has been shortened down to almost only Peugeots at this point?

Kinja'd!!!1

Yes. The Citroën BX I had has been sold. The BMW (E30 Touring) I own has been auctioned off and I’ll part with it tomorrow . That leaves the 3 Peugeots shown above, my mk2 VW Golf (my first car, parked in a shed years ago) and the company car that was forced on me (Ford Focus wagon). So yes, basically just the three Peugeots.

Awesome! Sad to hear you had to part with the BX and Touring, but it’s for the best and their next owners will enjoy them immensely. So if you have a company car but DD the 406, where does the Focus live? And I assume you still have the Golf but it’s just stored away? Are there any plans for the little VW at the moment?

The 406 and the Focus are street parked. Exactly where the 406 and 205 are in the picture you found. I keep the 205 in a little garage. The 306 is currently in my company’s underground parking garage, one floor below where I photographed it. I want to sell either the 306 or 205 this year, solving my storage problem.

The Golf is in storage at some farmer, boxed in by caravans. I do have plans to restore it eventually. But not this year and probably not next year either.

Nice. So I guess you just keep the Focus on hand for whenever all of your other three French cars are broken (which I would assume might happen because French engineering...just kidding)? And how did the Golf end up there? That’s an interesting means of storage...

The Peugeots are actually rather reliable. The 406 is my daily driver, and I’ve driven it 90+k km in less than 3 years, from 167k to 258k. Nothing but normal maintenance really. Well, I preventively replaced both the battery and the radiator and the muffler was replaced as well. Nothing out of the ordinary for a 15 years old car imho. Zero rust on the 406 and 306, nothing troubling at all on the (27 years old) 205.

I use the Focus for work only. Literally for nothing else. If I do use it privately it would be seen as a form of ‘income’ provided by my company and I’d have to pay a form of income tax for it. It’s got a black box with GPS, so no cheating. Now it’s utterly free.

Any car is reliable as long as you keep up on the maintenance, with a few exceptions...rust is a bit of an unknown beast to me since I live and have grown up in CA where it never rains or snows...if I may ask, what is your occupation? I’m interested to see what lead them to give you a Focus for work purposes...is there any reason why you couldn’t use the Pugs to avoid accidentally incurring tax on the Ford?
